SAMI MUSEUM KAUTOKEINO      
 

Proposal for new “Sámi Culture” museum in Norway. A single elliptical shaped structure that is raised above ground by 3.5 metres. All the functions of the museum are housed in this structure. The museum is placed above the tree line so that visitors can have clear views of the surrounding landscape. The inner room raises from a height of three metres where offices, workshop, and administration are located, to the main exhibition area which is six metres tall. It is top lit by roof lights that provide natural light.

The structure is lightweight and can be easily assembled from prefabricated elements. Similar to the spirit of Sámi’ seasonal migrations the structure is not grounded can be moved if required.

Entrance to the museum is by a gradual stone ramp which rises from the landscape to a height of one metre. The experience of approach is of walking through the trees before raising up from the woods into an enclosed shelter underneath the museum structure. The entrance area is at this level and houses WCs, cloakrooms and a plant/utilities area together with the main stair and an optional elevator. Entry is from the south and the entrance area faces east with a double glazed wall and a timber balcony which extends into the forest. The entrance structure is of in situ cast concrete.

Entry into the museum itself is about surprise, delight and discovery of an extraordinary space. The internal stair rises up into the shaped structure and visitors enter the museum spaces to the west. The interior has exposed steel ’ribs’, faced ply wood cladding and is perforated by natural daylight. Offices, workshops and other administrative spaces are concealed behind the entrance area. Shop, café etc are by the central drum, temporary exhibits. The main gallery space is a large flexible space with possibilities for built-in display units, hanging elements and freestanding display units.

The museum structure comprises steel ribs at 6 metre centres that give form to the structure. They can be prefabricated off site and assembled easily. The steel framing is clad with curved pre stressed birch faced plywood panels to form a monococque structure. This is then clad with waterproof membrane, insulation and
