Concept
Housing is arranged in a series of gently curved waves that follow the
natural slope of the site. These waves are connected by a single road.
This arrangement makes a clear separation between cars and public areas
and allows for the planning of different types of open spaces.
Shared Gardens
All housing units open onto large shared gardens. These gardens can
have areas for large plantings, areas of grass, play areas, water, allotments,
sunbathing, sports and public gatherings. They are inspired by the Garden
City movement, Radburn and the Georgian squares of London. The gardens
are the responsibility of the residents who decide on plantings and
uses. Pathways pass through these gardens to connect across the entire
site. Shared entrances to each unit also open directly onto the communal
gardens.
Street Gardens
The street side is a multi layered landscape of cars and parking, private
gardens, public planted areas and hard landscaped seating areas. The
life of the neighbourhood can take place here with maximum transparency.
The communal gardens have Housing units have balconies and roof terraces
at higher levels and private courtyard gardens at ground level that
open onto the communal gardens. competition project 2003
