KYRLS QUAY

LIVING OVER THE SHOP...

To integrate the Kyrl’s Quay site into the city and to make it a focus point for connecting the river and the city we have adopted two strategies - A FRAGMENTATION OF ELEMENTS that allows for new flexible public spaces and a diverse but concentrated urban density and the CREATION OF NEW VISUAL ATTRACTORS that will give the area an identity with a new skyline that connects to the rest of the city.

The site is cleared and populated with A FAMILY OF OBJECTS that range in scale and height from small kiosks to multifunctional structures for housing, retail, culture and commercial activities. This family of objects is based on live ground floor uses with residential and commercial uses on upper floors. In the case of the fishmonger and the baker they would both live over their businesses. Other smaller structures include cafes, a nursery, galleries, workshops and local shops. Larger structures that house extensions to the existing shopping centre would have housing and commercial above. There is also a ‘black box’ multi-functional performance space. We would envisage around 150 new hosuing units. Parking is underground. The space between the new structures becomes flexible - AN OPEN FIELD for events and activities. It can extend the existing market on Cornmarket Street ; the river banks can become a performance space for large scale events. The new square in front of the police station becomes a hard landcaped park for relaxation and meeting. New pedestrian links are created between the shopping centre, the car park, the river and the city.
