The flat plane of the Reykjavik's airport is manipulated by excavation and land fill to create an emerging green infrastructure that provides a new urban framework for Vatnsmyri. This underlying new topography provides the framework to distribute built form, open space, circulation, and orientation and visual links. It has been generated with reference to Iceland’s natural and geological features, the pervading winds, the surrounding context and linkages to the existing city centre. A green axis extends from the city centre to the ocean. The axis is car free with walking routes and bicycle tracks. The undulating forms of the axis provide shelter from the winds and the opportunity for a diverse range of micro ecologies so that different forms of plant life, vegetation and wildlife can flourish. The axis provides for a sequence of public spaces and event spaces that are both formal and informal. The green network extends throughout the site providing amenities to residential areas, small public squares and large fields for informal outdoor events and sporting activities. It encourages connections across the site. |
